Ascension Day

Meaning & Origin

Ascension Day, or Christi Himmelfahrt, is a Christian holiday that commemorates the ascension of Jesus into heaven 40 days after his resurrection on Easter Sunday. It is a religious holiday that is celebrated with traditional church services. Over time, in Germany, it has also become synonymous with Father’s Day or Männertag(Men’s Day). This secular tradition dates back to the 19th century and has evolved into a day where groups of men, often pulling wagons filled with beer and food, go on hiking or bicycle tours. This dual observance of a religious holiday and a secular celebration is unique to Germany.

Ascension Day will be celebrated on Thursday, May 29 in 2025, and the following year, in 2026, it will take place on Thursday, May 14.

How it’s Observed

Ascension Day is a nationwide public holiday. Schools, offices, and most shops are closed. While some people attend religious services, many, particularly men, use the day for the more modern Father’s Day traditions. The day is filled with groups of men trekking through the countryside, singing songs, and enjoying the spring weather. The atmosphere is jovial and informal, a stark contrast to the religious significance of the day. In some rural areas, the older traditions of processions and blessings are still observed, blending the sacred with the profane.

Vacation Planning

Since Ascension Day always falls on a Thursday, it is a prime example of a Brückentag. By taking Friday off, people can create a four-day weekend, making it an extremely popular time for short getaways. The weather in May is often pleasant, making it an excellent time for a road trip, a city break, or a hiking vacation. Travelers should be aware of the dual nature of the holiday; while most businesses will be closed, the trails and parks will be bustling with groups celebrating Father’s Day.
